A hydrophobic yarn in contact with the skin that wicks moisture outwards, keeping the skin dry. A hydrophilic yarn on the mid-outer side that absorbs moisture from the skin and spreads it for faster drying. A durable thread on the outside (usually nylon) that protects areas most exposed to friction depending on the type and level of activity.
