MC-X Demo

The revised MC-X impressed testers right from the fitting, starting with the custom dual-dial Boa Coiler liner closure and the way the boot cradles the foot once assembled into the two-buckle nano-fiber chassis. The tighter tolerances between the liner toe and the chassis toe box are noticeable when putting them on, creating a vacuum-sealed feel. The fit is a consistent medium, but runs short in length, even for testers who went up a size. In fact, Apex recommends going one to two sizes larger than your usual size.

On the snow, lateral performance is impressive: testers described the upper chassis as the boot's command center. By keeping the leg aligned within this column, you can tilt and attack with authority. The tighter interface between the liner and the frame significantly improves power transmission to the ski and the sharpness of transitions from one turn to the next.

Testers were less enthusiastic about the fore-aft adjustment. The new forward lean adjustment is a major improvement over previous versions, but the fore-aft balance point remains difficult to find. Most felt a more forward position than on the MC-3, even at the same setting, and a few found that the flex collapsed under load. Straightening the position by one more notch and adding a stiffer elastomer to the flex arm are the adjustments the test team suggests.

The three-layer, dual-density outsole, featuring Vibram Ice Tech lugs, works wonderfully: sticky grip and featherlight weight. The walkability of the Apex liner remains unmatched.
